TUESDAY NOVEMBER 13TH 2012 is the launch day of an annual nation-wide initiative, “Close the GAP day”.
“This is a day to Give, Appreciate and Participate, closing the gap between people”, says Barbara Mariposa at Creating Health, who is launching this initiative because of the positive health bene
fits now scientifically proven to occur when we are kind, generous and connect with others.
Anyone: can take part on Nov 13th, wherever they are, on the tube, on the bus, in a queue, in a café, or at work. Simply intend and take action to:
- Give (a smile, a sandwich to a homeless person, a donation)
- Appreciate (a compliment, a thank you, a thoughtful text)
- Participate through your actions and spreading the word
Friends and Family: Close the GAP day is the perfect opportunity to organise an event in your community, clean an elderly neighbour’s house, cook dinner for a tired parent, invite in the neighbours you rarely speak to.
Small businesses and local traders: Raise your community profile, promote your business, and create an atmosphere people want to be part of on Close the GAP day. Display the poster in your window, wear the T-shirts on November 13th and send your customers away with smiles on their faces.
Schools: Close the GAP day is an ideal project topic to model and develop positive interpersonal skills, and learn about the health-giving benefits of kindness. Draw posters, play games, write a song, a poem, and share what you did on the day.
Corporate World: Businesses that participate in Close the GAP day stand to reap huge rewards in staff wellbeing, job satisfaction, productivity, morale and motivation, as well as a subtle shift in culture and working relations. The potential long-term health benefits could, at zero cost, have a big impact on stress, absenteeism, and the considerable price of these for any business.
Taking part in Close the GAP day will enhance immune functioning, reduce levels of stress chemicals, and raise those of ‘feel-good’ endorphins and oxytocin. Compassion produces measurable structural changes in the brain. New neural pathways are generated. The more these are “trained up”, the more robust we become in dealing with the difficulties and pressures of life, reducing the experience of “ stress”.
Our approach to wellbeing needs rethinking. A more powerful question than: “What can I do” is “Who can I be?” From this shift, action will follow.
