Security officials in Guyana, yesterday, arrested eight
persons following the seizure of close to 60 pounds of
cocaine found in a checked suitcase aboard a Caribbean
Airlines plane bound for New York.
An official from the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU),
James Singh, said the drug was found late Saturday by
authorities at the Cheddi Jagan International airport.
This is CANU's fourth major drug bust at airport since
the start of the year.
Earlier this year, 12 airport employees were fired after a
bag with 50 pounds of cocaine was thrown over a
perimeter fence.
Guyana is believed to be a transit point for South
American drugs bound for the US and Europe.
